Five Steps to Exterior House Painting

Five Steps to Exterior House Painting

Published Date: June 26th, 2014 | Category: Exterior Painting

We here at DuraPro Painting have a five-step approach to preparing for exterior house painting in Minneapolis.

Step one to prepare for exterior house painting is to make sure all of the dirt and mildew is washed off of your home’s exterior walls. We will generally hand wash or power wash or do a combination of both. We always want to start with a clean surface. This will help ensure that the paint goes on smoothly and evenly and that the dirt doesn’t cause the paint to discolor or look dirty after it’s been applied.

From there, we scrape away all of the loose paint and sand off any uneven areas. This also helps us to make sure that the paint goes on evenly and that there aren’t any unsightly bumps in the paint after our work is done. We also make sure that all gaps are caulked because that keeps water and air from seeping into your home after the exterior house painting process is complete.

When all of that is done, we then start to apply the primer. Some folks think this step isn’t necessary, but it is because this also helps ensure the paint goes on evenly and smoothly. Plus, the paint adheres to it better so it will not flake off as quickly as it would without the coat of primer underneath.

After the primer has fully dried, the paint is ready to be applied! Most exterior house painting jobs take more than one day to complete, so patience is a virtue in this situation. A company like ours is very careful with their work, and we take great pains to be sure that the paint is applied properly.
